ATDB Architecture and Infrastructure

Intranet servers

The ATDB team uses a collection of intranet servers to gather, verify and ensures permanent internal consistency of records. All information is stored in Oracle databases and accessed by proprietary 3GL applications and scripts by the ATDB staff and robots which permanently monitors the Internet. For security reasons, these intranet servers are reserved for internal use and are fully protected. Core systems are hosted by Unix and Macintosh computers, with PC Windows only used for final quality assurance before release. To facilitate disaster recovery, backup files are stored in distinct geographical locations.

Synchronization gateways

Specific tools were developped by ATDB to provide fast synchronization between the Oracle intranet servers (above) and the remote mySQL internet servers (below). Synchronizations are very fast, less than a minute, and enable multiple uploads every day. Routines also allows synchronization from anywhere worldwide using a simple portable computer.

These gateways are also offered to companies willing to update their own databases with the permanent update stream provided by ATDB. Check the ATDB services page for details.

Internet servers

Internet servers are accessed by all ATDB subscribers 24 hours a day and are constantly updated from our internal servers. We target a 100% uptime availability (current value: 99.999% or 5 minutes downtime per year) and a response time of 1 second or less for most queries (current average is: 0.411 second). Internet servers use mySQL database engines and applications are mostly in the php language to alleviate most end users O/S dependencies. They are hosted on a redundant array of Linux computers monitored 24 hours a day.

Since 2004 our Internet servers processed over 2 million HTTP page requests and nearly 12 GB of data every month, accessed from over 94,000 distinct IP addresses.

Mirror sites are synchronized in parallel with the main site and can be activated should a failure occur. Our primary domain www.aerotransport.org can also be accessed from our reserve domain at www.atdb.aero. If needed, additional sites can also be built within 4 hours.
