Avianca Colombia Aerovias Nacionales de Colombia AV AVA Colombia Bogotá 1933- Formed by the merger of Pan American's SCADTA (formed 5/12/1919) and Servicio Aéreo Colombiano. 38% then 18% stake by Pan Am. Nationalized during WW2. Took over ARCO in 1941, LANSA in 1951 and SAETA in 1952. Later reorganized as a subsidiary of Grupo Valores Bavaria (owned by Julio Mario Santo Domingo) and Colombia's National Coffee Growers' Federation (each 50%). Integrated SAM and ACES under Allianza Summa on 20/5/02, until late 2003 when alliance was dissolved. Entered bankrupcy in 2003 (until 12/12/2004). Expected to be partially acquired by LAN Chile (in 2003), then Continental Airlines (in 2004, in partnership with Copa Airlines); plans cancelled. Grupo Valores Bavaria share (50%) and half of National Coffee Growers' Federation (CCF, 25%) resold in 2004/2005 to Sinergy (Brazilian group controlled by German Efromovich, and also controlling Brazil's Ocean Air) which then owned 75% of Avianca (despite a counter-offer by Avianca pilots along with Arab-based interests in 10/04). Emerged from Chapter 11 in 12/2004, being renamed ACA/Aerovias del Continente Americano. Sinergy share increased to 100% in 11/2005. Announced on 7/10/09 merger with Grupo TACA (owned by Kingsland Holding Limited) through a newly formed holding company (Avianca Holding SA, Panama), keeping separate brands and AOC. Merger agreement completed 2/2/10 with newholding company Avianca-TACA Limited, based in Bahamas, owned 67% by Grupo Synergy, 33% by Kingsland Holding. IPO on 28/3/11. Joined Star Alliance (announced 11/10, effective 22/6/12). Formed Panama-based subsidiary Regional Express Americas to operate ATR-72's, plan put on hold in 5/13. Entered bankrupcy on 10/5/20.
